Welcome

Hello and welcome to the WiredSoc (a.k.a the Computing Society of the University of St Andrews) webpage. Here you can learn about the society, such as what services we provide for students, who the committee are and how to join the society.
If you find any problems with the website please contact the Website Co-ordinator at dasx199@wired.st-andrews.ac.uk
You can also email the committee at committee@wired.st-andrews.ac.uk
Feel free to come along to one of our weekly meetings with any suggestions, problems or even just for a friendly chat.

Second Powercut

Wireds Services will be interrupted for a second time due to the second scheduled power cut by Scottish power on the north haugh.

We are going to take this opportunity to start work on replacing one of the servers.

As a result of this and the locking of the computer science buildings overnight for the powercut. Services will be unavailable from approximately 5pm tomorrow until 3pm Saturday.

No services will be available during this time (all the boxes will be switched off)

Powercuts

There will be a short interuption to wireds services this afternoon whilst scottish power carries out some works on the north haugh. It should start from about 13:00. and finish before 15:00.

There will also be a longer powercut on friday evening into saturday.

Meetings

Well, our first meeting on Tuesday didn't seem to go too badly. Thanks to everyone that turned up and I do hope to see you at more of these events in the future.

As a committee, we now have an idea of what you want from your society. We found it beneficial and hope you did to.

Anyway, these meetings are a regular thing. We run them every week at 1900 on Tuesdays in Salad Bowl 3 (door nearest Venue 2 on the top floor of the union). I do hope to see you all at some point over the next few weeks, even just to say hello.

New box!

New equipment has arrived and is currently being configured.

The new box is to replace smoked and the current plan is for smoked to be used at gaming events and other situations where we need equipment to take with us. The switch over will hopefully happen in the next two weeks at which point there will need to be some downtime of all of wired services (except IRC) whilst we move the new kit into smoked's box. A full announcement of when this will happen will be made on IRC and here on the website.

In other news the first meeting of WiredSoc will be on the 29th of September. (Location to be confirmed)

Email System

Following the problems with smoked over the last few days email should now be back to normal. Exim (the mail transfer agent) was down for less than 5 hours yesterday evening meaning that any emails sent when it was down would have been (or should have been) resend by the sender.

The actual deliveries to users have resumed delivering all waiting emails (for example I have just got emails sent to me on thursday).

This fix will hopefully hold until we get a new box in.

On slightly related note.
I have implemented a system-wide filter with deletes all emails that the university mailserver this are spam (the precise definition for the filter is Where subject starts with "{Spam?}"). This should dramatically reduce the amount of spam received.

However this is currently only a trial run so if any one has problems with false positives (legitimate emails not received) let me know and I'll investigate.

Issues with smoked

Update 2: Problem solved (for now). We are going to be getting a new box to replace smoked soon.

We are currently experiencing some issues with our storage server - smoked. This appears to be causing:

  • Email not to be delivered to home directories (I believe that the mail is currently being accepted for delivery by the MTA but due to I/O issues is not being written to home directories for delivery - I could not guarantee this. Mail collection (POP3 and IMAP) is functioning as normal.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be held Wednesday the 22nd of April (i.e. tomorrow) in the union main bar at 3pm. All members are welcome.

P.S. fragged will be restarted at some point today (Tuesday) during its upgrade to debian lenny. I will post on IRC a few minutes before the reboot. IRC may be affected and BZFlag server will be affected.

Update: Fragged will now be updated at a later date.

AGM Results

The AGM results are as follows.

Update: the minutes are now available.

Note the results are provisional as the meeting was aquorate (i.e. less than 20% of the societies members were present).
